Things to Do in Baguio

Often visitors to the Philippines are looking forward to tropical heat and beaches. However, if you inhabit the warmer zones of the Pacific, Baguio in the mountains of Benguet offers an escape to cooler temperatures during the Summer and even a taste of winter during the end of year holiday celebrations. For some tips to help you make the most out of your visit to this busy and popular tourist spot, read on to find what kind of things there are to do in Baguio.

Holy Week and Our Lady of Atonement Cathedral

During Holy Week every year, the population of Baguio doubles and even triples as devout catholics travel to celebrate Easter Sunday at Our Lady of Atonement Cathedral. Located on top of the hill above Sessions Road, be ready to climb many stairs to reach it when dropped off by a taxi or bus. The car park is positioned next to the church for easy access. There are daily masses held and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes welcomes you to stop and pray. The cathedral features beautiful stained glass windows and a clock in one of its spires. During Holy Weeks arrive early to get a seat, or expect to worship while standing outside.

Panagbenga Flower Festival

Every February the city explodes with blooms and blossoms during the Panagbenga Flower Festival. There are parades, street dances, and pop-up merchants that help to celebrate the tropical colors and excitement. Most of the festivities take place along Sessions Road, which runs down the center of the city. There are activities scheduled all day long during the festival. Check with your hotel concierge and local news stations for details and times.

City Market

If you look to experience local culture, crafts, and enjoy a day of shopping check out the open air City Market centrally located right off of Sessions Road and Magsaysagy Avenue. You’ll find fresh fish, fruits, vegetables, clothing, trinkets, and unique handcrafts. There are no glitzy malls or standard shops featuring your favorite brands here, just a huge selection of items you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Mines View Park

When you wish to escape the bustle of the city, head out to Mines View Park. Bring your hiking shoes, as the only way to reach the top of the hill is by climbing a large number of stairs. You’ll enjoy wipe open vistas, some fun wooden horses to climb, and a wishing well. In years past, local children would climb down the hill and capture coins tossed by tourists. There is now a wishing well pond that safely collects your good thoughts.

Mansion House

Situated outside of the city limits, the summer residence of the President of the Philippines provides a fun tourist stop when the ruler is not in residence. Enjoy landscaped gardens and a tour of the beautiful home built by the Americans after World War II.
