Vung Tau Things to Do – Attractions & Must See

Vung Tau Things to Do

Vung Tau, Vietnam, is a seaside town. Here’s how to visit the beach, beat the heat, and visit a temple built for whales.

Front Beach – A Working Fishing Beach

Front Beach is a strip of beach near a wide tree lined boulevard with two parks. It is about one kilometre long and its graceful curve is wedged between Big Mountain and Small Mountain. It is a working fishing beach. Make a point of rising early – 5:30 am – to catch the fishermen and their wives busy at work. There can sometimes be twenty small fishing boats on the beach unloading catch, re-stacking nets, taking on supplies, etc. Don’t forget your camera.

Front Beach is where Vung Tau residents like to have their morning swim. There are many coffee shops, breakfast shops and restaurants to be found at Front beach. For those who know their history, Front Beach has a long and colourful history which includes pirates, whales, a tall ship naval battle, tunnels, resistance fighters and even a mad Emperor.

Ferry Ride

To escape the heat, take a fast ferry ride to Ho Chi Min city on the local Hydrofoil – it’s a pleasant and inexpensive trip. The ferries leave every 30 minutes and take about 20 minutes for the trip. They dock right at the main ferry wharf in the city.

Lang Ca Ong (Whale Temple)

The Whale Temple is based on a legend that whales protect ships and their crews. Inside this temple are the bones of a huge whale on display in glass cases. On the inner side of the wall surrounding the temple are mosaics and paintings telling the legend of village fishermen who were rescued by a whale when they were attacked by a marine monster.
