Tips on Ko Tao Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Ko Tao Warnings or Dangers

Ko Tao, Thailand, is known for its scuba diving and beaches. Before you go, be aware of the warnings or dangers in Ko Tao in order to stay safe!

Motorcycle and Scooter Rental

There are motorcycle and scooter rental shops around Ko Tao, but be wary if you decide to rent one. You may be asked to leave a personal item with the rental shop for collateral, like your passport or a deposit. Then, when you return the bike, the rental shop will find dings, scratches, or other damage and demand payment before you can get your property back (or they will keep your deposit and possibly demand more). Additionally, some roads in Ko Tao are not in great shape, so even if you are an experienced rider, there is a chance you could get seriously injured. If you are injured in a bike accident, you may have trouble finding adequate medical care. In fact, there is a word for burns from Ko Tao scooters and motorcycles, “Thai tattoos.”

Know Your Fish

If you go scuba diving or snorkeling in the water, make sure you either have experience or go with a guide. There are many interesting fish and plant life in the water, but some may be dangerous. For example, the Triggerfish is an exotic looking fish found in the waters off of Ko Tao, but it is very territorial and aggressive. Get too close to a male Triggerfish guarding his nest and you may get a nasty bite. Scuba diving instructors can give you basic guidelines for exploring the water, but never approach or touch a plant or animal you are unsure of.

Insects

Ko Tao is in a tropical climate surrounded by water, so there are voracious mosquitos and other biting insects which can spread diseases like dengue fever and even malaria. Wear long sleeves and pants if you are in an area that has a lot of insects, and use insect repellant.
