Amritsar is one of the spiritual homes of India. As you visit this city, bear in mind that it’s a very special place for many people of faith.

Mind the Monkeys

As in many other parts of India. monkeys are everywhere in Amritsar. Don’t carry food in the open or they will follow you. There are many wooded areas in the city. Monkey are frequently seen overhead. Be careful when walking and look up when you’re sitting down. If you don’t choose to feed the monkeys, bring a walking stick with you and gently shoe them off.

Religious Structures

This is one of the centers of the Sikh religion. When visiting any temples or other religious houses such as mosques, follow the rules. In general, you will be asked to take your shoes off and dress conservatively. Smoking is not allowed and visitors must cover their heads. The retreat ceremony is another commonly watched ceremony in this area. Keep silence as the flags are lowered and the parade begins. The ceremony lasts half an hour. Consider leaving any small children in your hotel room as they may not up for it.

Advice for Women

Women traveling alone should dress conservatively even in the waterfront areas. Avoid getting into cabs by yourself whenever possible. Local buses can be dangerous so try to sit up front by the driver. Women should be wary of accepting a ride from strange men. This is a more conservative culture than many others. Unmarried women are frowned on when engaging in conversation with men. Exercise caution at all times.

Eating and Drinking

As in many other parts of India, Amritsar has a rich cuisine that is all about spices. Such spices may be unfamiliar to you so taste them on a small piece of bread. Keep in mind the cuisine here is often very spicy and hot so proceed carefully. To quench your thirst, look for bottled water. Check to see that the seal is not opened before you drink it.
