Sarande Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus and Airport Tips

Sarande Transportation

There are many transportation options while arriving to or getting around Sarande, Albania. Here’s what you need to know.

Hydrofoil

Twice a day you can get a convenient connection between Greek island of Corfu and Sarande on the hydrofoil. The journey takes 30 – 45 minutes.

Ferry

You can also get to Sarande from Kerkyra, Corfu on a ferry. There are one or two a day and, while there are official timetables for ferry times, they generally leave between 8 – 10 a.m. and between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., weather permitting. The ferry ride takes about 90 minutes.

  • Before boarding you must go to the Greek passport control office to hand over your passport and obtain a boarding pass. They will hold onto your passport to give to the boat captain to finish your paperwork and visa to present to Albanian port officials.
  • Wait to board the ferry until an official or the captain calls your name (listen carefully, pronunciation may not be what you expect!)
  • You may have to pay an entry fee to Albanian custom officials upon arrival and they’ll stamp your passport.
  • People from EU countries can use other forms of ID.

Always check to see the latest requirements for border crossing as criteria has been changing in recent years to make it easier and to encourage tourism.

Taxis and Buses

Taxis are relatively cheap, reliable and a comfortable way to get around Sarande. If you go in groups of two or more, you can even split the fare. Buses are less expensive than taxis but they leave very early in the morning and are not very comfortable (buses look to be quite old). Tickets are primarily sold on board.

All in all, traveling to Sarande is lots of fun. Highly recommended! Just remember, if you travel in from Greece, don’t forget to adjust your watches to local time; it’s an hour difference.
