Gibraltar Things to Do – Attractions and Must Sees

Gibraltar Things to Do

A long-standing tourist destination, Gibraltar, while small, is chock-full of fun things to see and do.

Barbary Apes

Most people planning a trip to Gibraltar have heard of the famous and infamous Barbary Macaques that run wild on the Upper Rock. It is unknown exactly how they came to Gibraltar, but many believe that they were probably introduced during the Moorish occupation of Southern Spain. A moderately domesticated troop occupies a section of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve known as the Apes Den, which can be reached by car or cable car.

St. Michael’s Cave

This cave is very large and contains many tunnels that are filled with stalactites of all shapes and sizes, and as the lighting changes, it alters their appearance every few seconds. There are also concerts that take place within the caves, and that represent various types of music. Another section of the cave, even farther underground is called St. Michael’s Lower Cave for which you will need to plan ahead and pre-book and pre-pay for a guided tour that includes a visit to an underground lagoon.

Beaches

Gibraltar has about six great beaches including Camp Bay, Little Bay and the most popular Catalan Bay. Eastern Beach is probably the biggest with the most sunshine. Western Beach and Sandy Bay are two of the more popular local beaches.

Town / Main Street

This pedestrians only street is the main place for shopping, commerce and entertainment. Leading from it are many side streets that are also worth exploring, and it is no surprise that there are many UK shops represented on the Rock. As Gibraltar is generally a day-trip destination, town can feel deserted, but still safe, if you venture off of Main Street in the evening.

Cable Car

The cable car brings you from the town center (close to the Botanical Gardens) to the top of the Rock. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy an amazing view and also browse the souvenir shop; this is a great starting point for your day on the Rock.

Forts

Gibraltar has many remains of fortresses and castles that are worth a visit, including the Moorish Castle, Parson’s Lodge, and Queen Charlotte’s Battery.
