Verona Opera Night at Arena and Other Nightlife

Nightlife in Verona: Opera Night at Arena

Famous for music and opera, Verona Opera at the Arena is an opera festival held from the end of June through the end of August each year. Opera night at the festival is an experience in different opera titles, a concert, and a ballet.

Performances

Opera titles may change from time to time but usually include Aida, Carmen, and Madam Butterfly. Sometimes performers put on Romeo and Juliet. You aren’t supposed to take photos during the performances. Each performance includes one to three intermissions, depending on length.

Great Tradition of the Candles

Because the arena once held no electricity, candles were used to illuminate the scenery and programs Aida performed on stage at night. Today, candles are provided to all opera-goers in memory of older days dubbed the “great tradition of the candles.” You’ll find these candles in the middle of the gate where you enter, in an unmarked box. A cellophane wrapper protects each candle with its meaning and origin explained on the package. Poke a little hole in the paper folder and stick the candle through to prevent wax from dripping on your fingers.

Other Things to Note

Restrooms are all at ground level and are only available to the more expensive ground level seats. If you are sitting higher up, your only option is to use the temporary restrooms on the street outside the Arena.

Performances begin after dark, but the arena starts filling up early. In addition, you can purchase tickets the same day. Bring a cushion since the stone seats are uncomfortable after sitting for an extended period of time.
