Antananarivo Transportation: Taxi, Train, Bus, & Airport Tips

Antananarivo Transportation

There are many safe, efficient, and economical transit options for traveling in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Transit to and from the Airport

You can avoid the taxi booking counter or touts inside the arrival hall who have fixed fares, although the vehicles are very new and safe. Walk to the parking lot and get the taxi from there for less, to anywhere in Central Tana. There will be many taxis, they’re beige with a TAXI sign on the roof.

There is a regular shuttle van to and from the Antananarivo Airport at Ivato (TNR) serving the route from Airport to Isoraka/Analakely, picking up and dropping off from any hotel. This is the cheapest way to and from airport for single travelers, with ample space for luggage and 22 seats. For 2 or 3 people, you do better to get a taxi for Ar 30,000.

Heading to the airport, the best place to catch the Shuttle Van is at Glacier Hotel Analakely. The fare is Ar 10,000 and is collected by the driver. Or call 034 05 565 49 for reservations.

At the airport, the pickup point is in front of International Arrival exit gate. Service: 5:00 AM-8:00 PM every 30-45 minutes.

Taxi Brousse

The most affordable way of inter-city travel in Madagascar is the Taxi Brousse. It comes in mainly 15-seat Mazada vans and big buses and the coverage is nationwide.

There are frequent departures in the morning, no fixed departure time as they depart when the vehicle is full with a maximum of 15 people. Hint: the most comfortable seat is just behind the driver. Luggage is stored on the roof and is well-covered.

There are big buses (called BOEING) on the Tana Tamatave Tana Route, more comfortable than the van, departing in the evening at 6:00 PM and arriving the next day. The best companies are VATSI, Kofi Manga and Transport Co, and the price is 15,000 to 16,000 MGA. Luggage is stored undercarriage free of charge.
