Tips on Tangier Warnings or Dangers-Stay Safe

Tangier Warnings and Dangers

The allure of beautiful beaches, exotic mystery and rich, cultural history draw many to visit the Moroccan city of Tangier. But, there are certain warnings to keep in mind to avoid potential problems and danger when you visit.

Hassling

One of the biggest annoyances in Tangier is being hassled by the locals. They want to be your tour guide and refuse to take no for an answer. If you want to shut them down, insist that you know where you are going unless you want to be subject to their personal favorites when exploring Tangier. This is especially true in the shops. Unless you want to walk out with a purchase, don’t ask for prices or more information. The people are relentless.

Alcohol

If you are looking for the typical Mediterranean resort, you should consider another country. Being intoxicated is not well received nor do all the restaurants serve alcohol.

Knife Threats

Be on the lookout when travelling alone. I was led up a blind alley by a guide who then proceeded to pull out a knife and demand cash.

Dirty Cheap Accomodations

Skip the cheap hotels. Upon checking out a hotel with “cheap rates” I was shown to a room with no bathroom and everything was dirty including the bedding. Opt for the more expensive hotels and in high season, book in advance.

Tanger Taxi Drivers

I picked up a taxi from the train station and gave the name of a pension that was recommended to me. The first taxi driver admitted he didn’t know where it was so I told him I’d find another. The second one claimed he knew where it was and then took me on a joyride through Tangier eventually stopping at some other pension offering to drop me off there. I told him absolutely not. He pulled off and started driving around again while the meter continued to rise along with my anxiety. The driver pulled a small vile out of his pocket with powder on it and proceded to snort it off his hand. This was the final straw. I asked him to let me out;  I tossed him a 5EUR bill which was the smallest I had on me and didn’t care about change. I just wanted out of that taxi.
