Tips on Quebec Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Quebec Warnings and Dangers

Quebec is one of the oldest cities in North America and sits on the edge of the Saint Lawrence River that carries the waters from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean. Here are some of the warnings and dangers observed by visitors to this magnificent city.

Cold Weather

Temperatures can plummet to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter. If you are going to visit when it’s cold outside make sure you have warm clothes, a hat that covers your ears, goggles to protect your eyes (especially when skiing), and petroleum jelly to put on any exposed skin to protect yourself against frostbite when walking around or skiing.

Walking

Temperatures regularly fluctuate during the winter and, if it warms up, icicles can fall off of the edges of the roofs. Be very careful on warmer days during the winter when walking along buildings. Many of the roads are narrow and you’ll be sharing them with cars. You need to be extremely cautious all year-round when walking along the streets. Make sure you cross at the lights and crosswalks since Quebec drivers can be aggressive toward pedestrians crossing the street at other locations.

Customs Tax Refunds

Non-Canadians can get the sales taxes they paid for certain items back when they go to the customs office at the border or airport. If you flew into Quebec, you want to make sure you get to the airport early enough for a full inspection. The customs officer will want to see your receipts and the items you bought before they will stamp the receipt so you can apply to get the money you paid in taxes back.
