Tips on Maldives Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Maldives Warnings or Dangers

Gorgeous white sand beaches, an amazing reef with teeming marine life and superlative luxury resorts, the Republic of Maldives makes for a dream vacation. Just watch out for a few common dangers during your stay.

Sunburn

The Maldives is right on the equator, so it has some of the strongest sun in the world. Unless you have naturally very dark skin, you need to cover up. Sunscreen is not enough if you’re in the water. Wear a t-shirt when snorkeling or swimming to prevent serious sunburn.

Coral

The Maldives is blessed with beautiful coral reefs. Unfortunately its beaches are plagued with broken bits of coral that you can step on. Watch you step and/or wear some footwear if you can. These nasty bits of nature can ruin your holiday with a gashed foot or cut toes.

Strict Customs

The strict laws of Customs on the Maldives prohibit the importation of pornographic material (including nude or semi-nude pictures on magazines such as Cosmopolitan), firearms, alcohol and illegal drugs (even marijuana) into the country. Exports of coral, shells and other object removed from the marine environment is also prohibited.

No alcohol is allowed in the capital Male and penalties are severe. If you want have a drink go to a resort – the regulations don’t apply to the resorts.

Trigger Fish

There are many things in the sea that can be dangerous. In addition to the obvious ones (shark, stingray, stone fish), watch out for Trigger Fish. The giant trigger fish grows to 30-40cm, has a distinct coloration and is very aggressive, especially if you come too close to its nest. Keep your distance when you see them.
