Tips on Kiev Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Kiev Warnings and Dangers

Kiev is a lovely city but like most cities there are some elements to watch out for. Be familiar with the dangers in the city and this will go a long way in protecting yourself during your visit.

Warnings About Kiev

As a tourist, chances are you’ll stand out from the rest so be on your guard. Unfortunately, there are some people, even those you think you can trust, who are not really honest.

  • Don’t put anything of value in checked baggage, even if locked; put in your carry-on
  • Avoid the safe deposit box at the hotel, sometimes employees will empty it
  • Watch out for taxi drivers who argue the fare and/or overcharge you
  • Unlicensed taxi drivers who lock your luggage in their trunk with intentions to extort money from you to get it back

Also, beware when using cash machines, the ATMs don’t always give out the amount you requested but will deduct the full amount from your account. Check receipts very carefully.

Corruption

Over the years police have been known to stop people (either driving or on foot) and demand money claiming laws were broken. Some report this situation has gotten better, but you never know when you might run into a corrupt police officer or the Ukrainian procedure of checking ID on the streets starts again. Always keep your passport on your person along with any papers you were given when arriving in the country. Jot down and carry the numbers to your embassy, travel agency or a translator who can help you.

Other Dangers

While out in the city you might encounter thieves or scammers.

  • Pickpockets are common, be mindful of surroundings
  • Panhandlers – If you do give money, be sure it’s only coins, don’t let anyone see your bills. If they think you have money, someone might tail you with bad intentions
  • If you see money or a wallet on the ground, just keep walking and don’t get close to it; it’s a scam to extort money from you

As you explore the city, do your best to blend in, avoid potential trouble and be sure to obey local laws. Don’t share your plans with strangers and walk like you know where you’re going even if lost. Getting familiar with the country’s language is also advised.
