Tips on Darwin Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Darwin Warnings and Dangers

Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory of Australia. During your stay, you will need to protect yourself against the sun, road trains, and wildlife.

Sunburns and Dehydration

Darwin is hot, so drink plenty of water. Dehydration can set in quickly and, if severe enough, may require you to spend a few hours or a night in the hospital. Travelers to Darwin should also pack sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. The Australian sun has put an end to many vacations, but it doesn’t have to ruin yours. Prepare before you leave and you’ll be fine.

Road Trains

If you rent a car in Darwin, drive with caution. In the United States, most semi-trucks have eighteen wheels, but in Australia, some have as many as 70. These road trains carry freight across the wilds of the outback. In Australia, It’s not uncommon to see four to five trailers attached to one truck. Because of their length, they can be difficult to maneuver, especially in bad weather. When driving outside the city limits, give road trains the space they need to change lanes and to come to a complete stop.

Wildlife

Australia is home to more than a few dangerous animals. Venomous spiders and snakes are native to the area, as are biting ants, crocodiles, and mosquitoes. While it’s impossible to avoid all wildlife, stay alert and don’t go swimming or hiking in unfamiliar areas. Darwin has several beaches and hikes worth visiting, but there are many others that aren’t safe.

Anyone who has been stung by jelly fish knows they pack quite a wallop that can leave you in pain for a couple of days.  If severe enough you may have to go to the emergency room.  Putting sand on the stings for a few minutes after emerging from the water helps, but watch out for them.

Many areas around Darwin have warning signs for crocodiles, so use caution.  If you see one, back away calmly.

Did You Get Your Shots?

While visiting Darwin, you may consider boosting your vaccinations against yellow fever, polio, tetanus, etc.  There are quite a few clinics to accommodate your needs.

Swimming

The beaches are stunning with white sand and clear blue water.  Make sure to travel to Darwin before October if swimming is on your list of things to do.  The deadly jellyfish inhabit the water from October to May.

Other Precautions

Darwin’s climate had distinct wet and dry seasons. Dehydration will sneak up on you in hot climates, so stay hydrated. Please drink lots of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.  Use sunscreen with at least SPF30.
