Things To Do in Helen, Georgia

Helen Things to Do

Helen in Georgia is a quaint little village that is just right for those looking to step back into life’s simple pleasures.

Tubing Activities

Tubing down the river in Helen is a pastime enjoyed by visitors of many ages. Trips are typically affordable and can range from an hour and a half to several hours long. For beginners, it is advisable to go when the river levels are higher. Tubing is generally safe for children with supervision and common sense. And be prepared to get wet! Water shoes or old sneakers are a good idea for the river bed rocks, along with a stick to help steer yourself away from them.

The Beauty of Waterfall Hiking

Anna Ruby Falls is actually two waterfalls – Curtis Creek Falls at 153 feet, and York Creek Falls at 50 feet. These waterfalls are spectacular and easy to visit. The paved Anna Ruby Falls Trail is only 0.4 miles from the visitor center with moderate elevation. Benches are along the way to take a rest. There is a $3 per person fee to visit the site, payable at a booth or inside the visitor center. The waterfalls were named after Anna Ruby Nichols, the daughter of a confederate soldier. Their confluence below the waterfalls turns them into Smith Creek, which flows into Unicoi Lake. The forest service has built very nice observation platforms at the end of the trail for viewing and taking pictures.

Dukes Creek Falls is a 200-foot cascading waterfall. Despite the name, the waterfall is actually on Davis Creek. The falls are easily accessed from the Dukes Creek Falls Recreation Area in Chattahoochee National Forest. A day-use fee for accessing this area is required, and payable at self-serve kiosks in the parking lot. From the viewing deck, the trail winds downward through a series of switchbacks and stairs to the base of the waterfall, but is pretty easy to hike. At the base, there is a big wooden platform where you can view the waterfall from different angles. You can also get a nice view of Mount Yonah in the distance from the rest area.

Raven Cliff Falls is located just outside of Helen in the Raven Cliffs Wilderness of Chattahoochee National Forest. From the parking area, hike along the Raven Cliffs Trail, which is well-marked and easy to follow. There are countless cascades and three waterfalls along Dodd Creek on the way. Use caution when going down to the creek as there is no trail and it’s quite steep. There’s no doubt when you reach the huge cliffs that the Raven Cliff Falls are nearby. The waterfall’s narrow chasm in the cliff makes it very beautiful and unique.
