Things To Do in El Yunque National Forest

The only rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, El Yunque is a must-see attraction for anyone seeking the best things to do in Puerto Rico, not least because it makes for an easy excursion right from the capital of San Juan. Here the top things to do in El Yunque.

First, Get a Map

Before you set out, stop by the Visitor Center to learn about El Yunque and pick up a map of the rainforest trails. Venturing into El Yunque without a map, or heading off-trail and getting lost, is one of the top El Yunque warnings and dangers

La Mina Falls and Trail

La Mina Trail is a popular El Yunque hiking trail because of the waterfall-fed pool at the trail’s end. The trail is partially paved, with some stairs and places that are cracked or rocky along the way. The 0.7 mile-long trail more or less follows the stream down to the falls and takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete. Along the way, there’s some really beautiful plant life to admire.

Because of its accessibility and natural beauty, the waterfall area is generally crowded with tourists. But, if you hike the trail early in the day or later in the evening, you are likely to encounter fewer people.

Yokahu Tower

Yokahu Tower Observation Point stands at an elevation of 1,575 feet above sea level. It’s a great place for panoramic views of the rainforest.
Also known as the Lookout Tower, the Yokahu Observation Point was named after the supreme being of the Taino Indians. The climb up is a bit tiring, but the view is worth the effort. There’s a store at the base of the tower where you can gear up for the return hike.
