Taxis, Dubai – Transportation

Dubai Taxis

Taxi is the fastest way of getting around the city, especially to places not well-connected by the metro. though most malls have a metro station beside them, the walks can be long, as is the case with Ibn Battuta mall, Dubai mall, and Mall of the Emirates.

Cost

Compared to similar cities, taxis in Dubai are cheap and plentiful. The cars are clean, new and safe, and the drivers won’t rip you off. Although Dubai’s transport system is improving, it’s still a city of cars, and it makes sense to use a taxi at some point in your trip.

Taxis have a an initial fee of 3.00 AED, with the minimum fare being 10 AED. Hence, if there are 3 or 4 of you in a group a taxi can even be cheaper, as the minimum charge in the metro using a silver Nol card is 1.80 AED per person for journeys under 3 kms. From the airport, the meter starts at 20 AED.

Women

Dubai is not generally considered to be a dangerous place, but if you are a woman traveling on your own, you may wish to use the pink-roofed, ladies-only taxi service driven by women.

Availability

Taxis can be difficult to get in Dubai. Ask the hotel staff to help you try to get a public taxi – the hotels will have their own metered vehicles but they’re more expensive.

A concierge service for taxis is available when you shop in the larger malls, complete with a red carpeted, roped-off waiting area.
