Tarragona Things to Do – Attractions & Must See

Tarragona Things to Do

Tarragona bridges Roman history and culture for modern tourists. From the monuments and cathedrals to the many other historical places, there are so many things to do and see in Tarragona.

Roman Amphitheatre

Anyone visiting Tarragona must visit the Roman Amphitheatre. Built early in the second century, the Amphitheatre held around 12 thousand people and still stands today. While this was a place for horrible and cruel entertainment, it is a part of Roman history and a great opportunity for learning. Children under 16 are free with adults.

Forum Roma

The Forum Roma was once the place to go for socializing and interacting in daily life. In the 19th century, the wars destroyed much of the square. However, the ruins are still a great piece of history to see.

Catedral de Tarragona

Catedral de Tarragona, or the Cathedral Basilica of Tarragona, is dedicated to two saints and a disciple: Saint Mary, Saint Paul, and Saint Thecla. Erected from the foundation of an ancient temple, construction lasted hundreds of years. The cathedral lies intact, unlike many other locations destroyed during the wars. To see the entire cathedral takes at least 3 hours.

The Archaeological Promenade and the Walls

The Roman walls are the old defensive walls of Tarragona constructed in the 3rd and 2nd century BC. Only 1100 meters survives today of the original 3500. The walls hold both Roman and Medieval age stones, which are distinctly different from each other. Walking along the Archaeological Promenade you’ll find three towers, gateway remains, statues and cannons, and markings in the stones from the quarrymen.
