Saint Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia. It is often referred to as the cultural center with beautiful architecture and an array of things to do and see. Like many International cities, Saint Petersburg has questionable water sources that can cause health problems with visitors.

Don’t Drink the Tap Water

The water in Saint Petersburg comes from Lake Ladoga. This water is known to have high levels of metals including lead that can cause a wealth of health problems. Never drink water from the tap unless you boil it first. It’s also a good idea to boil any water used for brushing the teeth and preparing food. If you choose not to boil the water, you can opt to use bottled water in all applications to avoid getting sick. Even the locals in Saint Petersburg boil the drinking water. Tap water is usually used for washing dishes and clothes.

Beware of Parasites

Along with heavy metal levels in the tap water, Saint Petersburg has been known to have Giardia. Giardiasis a parasitic infection that affects the small intestines. It occurs from drinking water or eating food that has been contaminated from a person or animal with the infection.  You can also choose to carry purifying tablets with you to kill any bacteria and parasites that may be lurking. Keep in mind that restaurants prepare meals using the tap water. Be smart when choosing menu items to avoid a stomach upset.

Choose Bottled Water

Bottled water can be purchased at local grocery stores, restaurants and street vendors. It’s best to avoid the risk of contaminated water and always choose bottled water. It is relatively cheap and easy-to-find. In hotels, ask for bottled water. Even a glass of water can be potentially dangerous.
