Siena Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Siena Transportation

Visiting Siena is a very special treat any time of year, but getting there can be a challenge. Here are some suggestions for arriving in Siena and transportation while in the city.

To avoid a long walk to the city center, a bus is the best way to get to Siena. It pulls up within a short walk of the city. Trains are faster of course, but a taxi would be needed to get from the train station into the city. If coming from Florence, there is a SITA bus station across from the Santa Maria Novella train station. After a ride of approximately one hour and twenty minutes, it will stop at the Piazza Garibaldi, which is just outside the city walls.

Driving to Siena by Car

Since bus transportation to Siena might not always be available when needed and trains stop too far away, a car is useful. With a car, a visitor could stay in accommodations outside the city and drive to the center. Otherwise, it is very hard to get around. While a car is not needed inside the center, it is great for getting to the city.

Parking in Siena

There are parking lots outside the city center. They are well-shaded with a lot of trees. Once inside the center, parking is usually restricted to residents only. Walking from the parking lot and walking in the direction of the Old Town, there are beautiful views to enjoy.

Navigating the City Center with a Car

It is very difficult to drive through the center of Siena with a car. The center is a maze of tiny streets and very steep hills. A good map is a must if trying to navigate the narrow alleys.
