Safety Tips in Dominican Republic – Travel Safety Tips

Dominican Republic Warnings and Dangers

The Dominican Republic shares a tropical island with Haiti and it is the most popular place for tourist to go out of all of the Caribbean islands. If you are going to head to the Dominican Republic for a vacation, here are some warnings and dangers safety tips you should know to ensure you have an enjoyable time.

Sunshine

The sun is very strong, so you must be very careful with sunburns and dehydration. You should always apply a good amount of sunscreen to your exposed skin while at the beach even on cloudy days or when you are walking around. Drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids while outside because alcohol will cause you to become even more dehydrated.

Exchanging Money

The best place to exchange money would be the banks. They usually publish their rates on screens or whiteboards, so browse and compare and sell your dollars to the bank that offers the most favorable rates. Do not exchange dollars on the black market (usually present where the tourists are) because they usually give bad rates, and who knows, maybe they will even give you back fake money.

Sankie Pankies

A sankie pankie is a man or woman who shows tourist men and women a good time on the island. They will take you to the discotheques/bars/restaurants and try to get you to fall in love with them so you start sending money to them when you return home. The goal for these people is to have you pay their way to your home country to live. When they get to your home country, they will often ditch you after getting a visa or a residency permit. Some even go to the extreme of marrying a tourist to get what they want.
