Warnings and Dangers in Santorini Island: Roads Driving Gas Stations

The beautiful tourist destination of Santorini Island in Greece has reliable and reasonably safe public transportation. The trouble usually only arises when tourists try to get around on scooters and mopeds on unfamiliar roads.

Scooters

Like many areas where the drivers are familiar with the roads, Greek drivers are laid back and go fast. This wouldn’t be a problem, except that many tourists become so transfixed by the views that they inevitably rent scooters or mopeds to get around. The result is a bit disastrous because not only are they unfamiliar with the roads, but many of them have never even sat on a motorbike before. They tend to shoot out of side streets with no warning and get in frequent accidents. If you intend to rent a scooter in Santorini Island, get some lessons first.

Public Transportation

You may have heard warnings about the drivers in Santorini, but really the safest bet is to stick to public transportation the whole trip. Largely those warnings are derived from the calamitous mix of experienced native drivers with unexperienced tourists. Rather than feel nervous in your bus or taxi, try to focus on the views. Drivers familiar with this area can navigate the extremely narrow streets with ease, even when it doesn’t seem like it.

Gas Stations

Many tourists have found it challenging to keep their mopeds or scooters full of gas while on the road between Fira and Oia. The gas station on the way to Oia from Fira is closed on Sundays, so try to plan ahead and avoid running out of gas.
