For the most part, North Philadelphia is home to  very poor families. The average tourist would not venture into North Philly, however there are many historical sights located in that part of the city. As a whole Philadelphia is pretty safe. Most of the crime and murders are isolated and almost always drug-related. As long as you don’t look for trouble you won’t find it.

Areas to Avoid

Don’t walk alone at night especially if your unfamilliar with your surroundings. Be especially careful in the Strawberry Mansion, Hunting Park, Kennsington, Nicetown neighborhoods.

Common Sense

In 1682, William Penn made a grid stretching from South St. to Arch between Front and 26th St. and named it Philadelphia. This is where most of the tourism is and for the most part, it is very safe. Philadelphia is a big city and there are some dangerous areas. If you are sight-seeing, you’re unlikely to feel in danger. If you’re looking for a place to live, you should be able to tell how the area is by the amount of garbage on the sidewalks and the condition of the homes. Just use common sense and you’ll be fine.

Drug Corners

On street corners in Fairhill – the Badlands of North Philadelphia – dealers openly sell illegal drugs, especially heroin, to passers-by. Philadelphia’s murer rate has dropped from the mid-2000s, when it was nicknamed Killadelphia, but there were still 277 murders in 2015, many of them tied to the drug trade in North Philly. Just stay away.
