Mussoorie Transportation- Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Mussoorie Transportation

If you are planning a getaway to Mussoorie, you probably would like to know the best transportation options available to help you get around.

Cycle Rickshaw at Mussoorie

Only in Mussoorie do you have the opportunity to see the sights and travel around in a Cycle Rickshaw. Since the town of Mussoorie is almost all horizontal ground, it is possible to see almost the entire town in a Cycle Rickshaw. There are areas of higher altitude that Cycle Rickshaw’s don’t operate. The Cycle Rickshaw is completely pollution free and operated by strong drivers that can handle the hills. Keep in mind this is the only source of income for them. Fare is about Rs.10- Rs30 per person and is fixed by the municipal corporation; the board displays the fare at the Rickshaw Stand.

The Mad Bus from Dehradun

We caught the local bus from the stop in Dehradun up to Mussoorie. Our tickets were Rs. 23 (less than AUS$1) for the trip, which is about 35kms. The bus was a fantastic old clapped-out thing that wheezed its way up the mountain. The road was windy with numerous switchbacks that would have offered stunning views back down into the Doon Valley if the weather had been clearer. The bus finally arrived at the Masonic Lodge bus stand with the actual town of Mussoorie further along the rideline via the traffic-free Mall. If you are staying in Mussoorie there are plenty of Cycle Rickshaws that will collect you from the bus stand.

Taxi

Taxis are for hire with rates around Rs 1000 per taxi and Rs 50 extra for the night charges , but you can also pay per seat in a shared taxi that typically can accomodate five passengers. While you may take a taxi to Mussoorie, it is not very useful to utilize taxis once you get there.

Plane

It is possible to come to Mussoorie by plane. The nearest airport is Dehradun Airport which is also known as the Jolly Grant Airport. There are flights from all the major cities in India to Dehradun with a stop over in Delhi.  All major airlines have daily flights to Dehradun. Mussoorie is just 30kms away from the Dehradun airport.
