Huntsville, Alabama, Things To Do – Attractions & Must See

Huntsville, Alabama, Things to Do

Huntsville is one of the largest cities in the state of Alabama, and home to many interesting attractions and things to do. Here’s what to do when you’re in Huntsville, Alabama.

Museums

The Huntsville Art Museum has a permanent collection of over 3,000 pieces, and also hosts several travelling exhibitions each year.  The permanent collection is focused on 19th and 20th century American art.  In addition to having pieces by well known artists such as James McNeill Whistler and Reginald Marsh, regional artists are well represented in the collection. Tours are available for an additional cost.

The Burrit Museum is quite different from other museums in the area. Dr. Burritt started construction on his home in 1934 on the top of Monte Sano mountain. Adjacent to the home are seven homes and units that were relocated here to create a village depicting the times of the late 1800s. Many have active displays of daily life reflecting pioneer times, each of which shows a different part of how people lived in that era. The grounds encompass 167 acres, and are open Tuesday – Sunday.

The Early Works Museum is a hands-on history museum for kids. It’s located next to the Constitution Hall Park Historic Village. This place is a nice, if small, museum for kids. And it’s an excellent destination to take your children if you’re hoping to give them experience in a setting taken from the pages of history.

Space

Home to the Apollo 16 Command Module Pathfinder and a Saturn V Moon Rocket, deemed a National Historic Landmark, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center has welcomed nearly 16 million visitors since opening  in 1971. When Dr. Wernher von Braun arrived in 1950 in Huntsville, the tiny town called itself the “Watercress Capital of the World.” Those days are gone. Today, it is forever remembered in history as the place where America’s space program was born. The museum has over 1,500 pieces of space program memoribilia on display, as well as activities for visitors. These activities include wall climbs, rocket ship rides, puzzles games, and more. The IMAX theater features a couple of great films as well.
