Crete Island Shopping – Shops, Stores, Best Buys & Inside Tips

Crete Island Shopping

Crete is one of the hundred largest islands in the world. It is also the biggest island in Greece. It does maintain some Greek traditions and principles, but the size of the island and its distance from the mainland of Greece have allowed it to keep its traditions when it comes to food and culture. This is something that you can experience while you are shopping on the island thanks to these tips.

Shop for Some of the Fine Local Crafts

One of the most popular items made and sold on the island are knives. The traditional knife is made in the style of a dagger. Some of them are made with maps of the island engraved on them. This symbolized the weapons used by ancient soldiers on the island. Another great place to buy local craft is the town of Melame, home of some fine jewelers.

If you want to purchase some local goods and support a good cause you should check the shop inside of the Moni Kaliviani. In this store, three sisters sell various needle points they have made. Portions of the proceeds from their sale go to help support the monastery.

Shop for Traditional Cretan Rugs

Another craft that Crete is known for is the carpet. Many of the rug makers in town use looms that are hundreds of years old in order to maintain the tradition as accurately as possible. They also serve customers tea while they wait on their creation. There are a number of his best carpets hanging around the shop to check out while you are waiting for yours to be made. They range in price depending on their size.
