Bus, Tram, Metro, Antwerp – Transportation

Transportation in Antwerp: Bus, Tram, Metro

The city of Antwerp dates back at least to the 4th century during the Gallo-Roman period of human civilization and is now part of the second-largest metropolitan area in Belgium. If you are traveling to Antwerp, here is some information on the transportation system that consists of buses, trains, and the metro.

Getting a Ticket

You can buy tickets from the automatic vending machines all around Antwerp. You can buy one-way tickets; all-day city passes; or even passes for the whole of Flanders. You can also get tickets for groups and special events.

Metro

Antwerp’s underground public transport isn’t actually a “Metro” as such, but rather part of the city’s tram network with the lines, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9 and 15, running through tunnels under the city center. The network is very easy to use with well-signed stations and schematic route maps. The electronic display on the trams announces the stations as you arrive. You can use the same ticket on the metro that you use for traveling on the buses and above-ground only trams.

Trams

The Antwerp tram system is a very popular mode of transport with both locals and visitors to the city. There are many stations dotted in and around the city, so it is always easy to find a tram to get onto to get around the city.

Buses

The Rooseveltplaats is the main terminal for local buses (although, there are plans to turn the area into a town square accessible only by pedestrians). You can usually catch a bus here to get to places where the metro and trams don’t go.
