Warnings and Dangers in Manila

The capital city of the Philippines, Manila combines modern skyscrapers with the old world charm of Spanish colonial buildings. However, there are general safety warnings and dangers you need to be aware of in Manila.

Poverty

Unfortunately, there is a lot of poverty in Manila, and you may find yourself faced with homeless families asking for help. This is especially true at night. While it’s up to you whether or not you decide to give them money, be aware that some can become persistent if you do.

Theft

Chances are you’ll be riding in some sort of open-air vehicle such as a jeepney, pedicab, or tricycle while you’re here. Be sure your valuables are out of sight in these vehicles, as individuals on motorbikes might snatch an item, especially a cell phone, from your vehicle very quickly and then drive away while you are stuck in traffic. This is more likely to happen in the Tondo and Divisoria areas. Be sure to keep your valuables close to you everywhere you go.

Heat

Manila and the Philippines in general are very hot. If you’re not used to walking everywhere in the heat, take things a little slowly. Make sure you have access to clean drinking water and use plenty of sunscreen.

In addition, you might want to do most of your sightseeing in the early morning hours or just before dark. It won’t be quite as hot and crowds will be sparse.
