Cavtat is a popular tourist destination on the Adriatic Sea. With a picturesque seafront and a long and rich history, this destination makes an ideal vacation spot.

Around Town

The shape of Cavtat means there are two bays, Luka is the larger, and is a nice place to catch the sunset. There is a footpath that follows the coastline, and it can be traveled in around 30 minutes, but there are also many shady benches, ice cream stands, and magnificent scenery along the way to distract a hiker.

Beaches and Scenery

The sea in Cavtat is clean and clear. While Cavtat does not have proper sand beaches, there are many nice areas for swimming and spending a day by the water. Hotel Cavtat offers lounge chairs and umbrella for hire, and one can enter the water from flat rocks. If you swim, remember to keep an eye out to avoid sea urchins but they are not too hard to avoid as the water is so clear you can easily spot them.

For a more traditional beach experience a day trip is necessary. Lopud Island is a short ferry ride from Gruz. Or one can catch a ferry to Old Dubrovnik, and the beach is a short walk from there.

Sights

One of the most famous sights in Cavtat is the Baltazar Bogisic collection, housed in the Prince’s Palace. Baltazar Baldo Bogisic was a scientist and a member of many intellectual societies. The collection preserves the intellectual and scientific legacy of Bogisic.

The Cemetery And Mausoleum of the Racic Family is set on a beautiful hilltop that offers spectacular views. The Racic family was a family of ship builders that were quite famous and wealthy in the area. A visit here for the views alone is well worth it.

Cavtat is also home to a number of lovely churches. Some are located on the waterfront, others in the center of Cavtat. Croatia is a Catholic country and has many lovely places of worship. Take a look inside these religious buildings when you get the chance to experience some of the local culture and art.
