Tips on Portland Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Portland Warnings or Dangers

Portland, Maine, is best known for its waterfront Old Port district, excellent food and beer, and outdoor adventure. Like all cities, there are several things you need to look out for when planning your visit.

Stay Safe in Winter Weather

If you aren’t used to driving in the snow and ice: slow down, avoid fast braking, and always be prepared for changes in weather. Before hitting the road make sure your battery is strong and you have a blanket and an emergency pack with snacks, water and a flashlight. If your car does get stuck in the snow or breaks down, stay in your vehicle until help arrives. Never park on the side of the road in a snowstorm: You’ll find your car buried under mounds of snow after plows hit the roads.

Use Common Sense

Portland has a low crime rate and most places are extremely safe to travel. This doesn’t mean you can let your guard down completely: Avoid walking alone at night, always be aware of your surroundings, and make good decisions when moving around the city. With the exception of Old Port, the streets are empty until morning.

Places to Avoid

While the majority of Portland is safe, the neighborhood northwest of Cumberland Avenue should be avoided at night. If you’re walking, avoid the street from Cumberland to I-285. Instead, stay between Cumberland and the bay.
