Tips on Isla de Roatán Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Isla de Roatán Warnings and Dangers

Isla de Roatán is the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras, in the Caribbean Sea. When visiting the island you should be aware of these local warnings or dangers that may affect your trip.

Mosquitoes and Sand Flies

Mosquitoes like humidity, which makes Isla de Roatán the perfect breeding ground for a mosquito swarm. To avoid them, bring or purchase insect repellent that contains DEET. Depending on the type of repellent you choose, you may need to reapply it every few hours for it to work.

Sand flies can also be an annoyance here, and are burrowed in the beach sand. These insects are extremely small. You probably won’t be able to see them, but they cause tiny, itchy red spots mostly on your legs and back. When you are on the beach, rub a layer of oil over your skin to keep them at bay.

Overpriced Taxis

On the Island of Roatán taxi drivers quote prices that are per person instead of by mileage. Always negotiate the price before you get into the taxi to avoid price gouging.

Cash Over Credit Cards

Just about every place in Roatán takes dollars and lempiras, but not every shop will take a credit card. Even though you can get an advance on your credit card, it’s better to bring more cash than you think you’ll need.
