Noboribetsu has a few unique attractions. Tourists will find some interesting things to do in the area.

Hell Valley

Hell Valley, known as Jigokudani in Japan, is famous for its hellish landscape. This valley of steam vents, sulphur streams, and rocky outcroppings is the source of the famous Noboribetsu hot springs. At the center of the valley is a 450 meter volcanic crater.

Tourists can take a bit of hell home by visiting the souvenir shop to buy volcanic ash shampoo, soap, and water from the spring.  Anyone interested in bathing in the sulphuric hot springs should visit one of the hotels located on “Hot Spring Street.” Here, overnight guests and day visitors can have a therapeutic dip.

Bear Farm

If you want to try feeding real bears, visit the Bear Farm, which has around 160 bears which visitors are allowed to feed. To get to the Bear Farm, take the cable car which stops in front of the farm. The cable car provides a stunning view of the town and is worth taking the seven minute trip in the winter just to se the town covered in snow.

Explore the Edo Period

Tourists who are interested in learning more about the history of the Edo period in Japan should visit Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura, which is a theme park that recreates an ancient Japanese town from this periodThroughout the day there live shows focusing on ninjas, samurai, and oiran courtesans. These shows are exciting to watch, but the narration is in Japanese without any translation.
