Dundee Things To Do – Attractions & Must See

Dundee Things To Do

This is the place to come for castles and science. At once contemporary and yet historic, Dundee is an ideal place to see how Scotland has evolved over the centuries.

Sensation Science Centre

Dedicated to helping visitors explore the five senses, the science centre offers more than fifty exhibits. This is a great place to head on a rainy day if you’ve got children. The exhibits here are hand-on so they encourage kids to explore by touch. In addition to the yards of exhibits, there are live science shows and demonstrations that encourage audience participation.

Glamis Castle and Broughty Castle Museum

The childhood home of the Queen Mother, Glamis castle is featured on a Royal Bank of Scotland note and dates back to medieval times. This is the setting for Shakespeare’s Macbeth and said to haunted by many ghosts. It’s still occupied by the current earl and his wife. Tour the many rooms and then head outside to explore the large surrounding gardens. Another area castle is Broughty Castle. While not quite as old as Glamis, there has been a castle on this space for centuries. Located at the mouth of local Tay River, entrance is free. Head up a flight of stairs for a view of the river and the entire city. There’s an adjacent beach where you can have a picnic. The interior contains a museum focused on the local area.

The RSS Discovery and The Frigate HMS Unicorn

Dundee has a large harbor that is still in use today. Two ships are particularly noteworthy. The RSS Discovery is the actual ship used by Scott when tried to reach the South Pole. It’s a great condition with many of the original fittings still intact. Head for the visitor’s center first where you can watch films and learn more about his trip and how it helped push the boundaries of scientific study of the pole further. Then walk along the ship from top to bottom. Another ship worth a look along the harbor is the frigate HMS Unicorn. This ship is another historic boat, dating from 1824.
