Tips on Bologna Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Bologna Warnings and Dangers

Bologna is somewhat off the beaten path for tourists visiting Italy, but nevertheless, it’s a city well worth visiting for its historical and architectural sites, nightlife, and delicious food. To really enjoy your stay, take a look at some of the hazards you should know about when visiting Bologna.

Beggars and Pickpockets

As in any busy city, it’s a good idea to guard your wallet closely when you’re visiting Bologna. You may be approached by people begging for money, but beware. Some are just panhandling, but others are looking for an opportunity to snag your wallet or anything else that you may have that’s valuable. Pickpockets often work in groups or pairs, with one jostling you or grabbing your hand to distract you while the other picks your pocket.

Keep your wallet in your pocket and your hand on it when you’re out on the street, especially if you’re surrounded by strangers. Don’t take cash or change out of your pocket – you’re only showing potential thieves where to look for it. If you carry a purse, put your wallet in an inner pocket and make sure to zip or latch it, as someone may try to reach into an open purse.

Pay Toilets

In some places, such as the Bologna railway station, you may encounter pay toilets that require you to insert correct change before you can enter. Make sure that you carry change with you – you don’t want to be stuck without restroom access when you need it.

Limited English

There are fewer English-speaking locals in Bologna than you’ll find in more common tourist spots, like Rome or Venice. If you’re going to spend time in Bologna, it’s a good idea to learn at least a few phrases in Italian, or bring an English-to-Italian dictionary with you.
