Part of Haifa, Zichron Yaakov is one of the earliest settlements in modern day Israel. The name of the town is Jacob’s Memorial in English and it makes for a pleasant stop along the coast. Founded by the Rothschilds, the town is noted for having several regional wineries where you can taste authentic local wines.

The Wine Road

The Wine Road is one of the town’s main streets and a popular place for people to come and relax. Strolling along this pedestrian street is wonderful way to explore the city. There are shopping bazaars, art galleries, many restaurants, and even a working winery. This is a great place to sample many different chocolates at the local chocolate bar that also offers flavors made from local ingredients like wine and pomegranates. Don’t forget to explore the side streets. The Rehov Ha-Meyasdim or Street of the Founders is a great way to see the original buildings of the town. It also makes for it a pleasant walk during the day. The city is built on many hills so it’s easy further explore it on foot. Climb to the top of the hills and you will be rewarded with some great views.

Taste the Wine

Zichorn Yaakov is surrounded by vineyards, making it one of the best places to enjoy the native wines. Stop by the Tishbi Vineyards for wines that include Merlot, Syrah and Rieslings. You can even bring your own bottle and fill up from one of the wine fountains for a small price. The Carmel Winery is another good place to visit. One of the most famous wineries in Israel, they offer tasting rooms and trained guides who can walk you through the different wines made here.

The Ramat Hanadiv Nature Reserve

This large nature reserve is home to many beautiful local plants and several diverse land species such as wild boar. The park offers well-kept trails and concerts and programs designed specifically for children. There are also lectures about the environment and a restaurant that serves dishes made from locally grown ingredients.
