Pickpockets, etc. in Venice and Other Warnings and Dangers

Pickpockets, etc.

Venice offers beautiful scenery and boat tours to explore the city’s architecture and history that surrounds it. However, anyone traveling through Venice should remain aware and alert of potential pickpockets, regardless of where or when you are staying in the city.

Be Aware in Heavily-Populated Areas of Venice

Although Venice is one of the biggest tourist destinations for those visiting Italy, some of the most popular areas should be on your radar to avoid becoming a victim of pickpocketing. Some of the busiest areas in Venice that are known for pickpockets include the Rialto Bridge Area and Piazza San Marco. Tourists are advised to keep valuables and money out of sight and also out of back pockets as this area is easiest for professional pickpocketers to steal wallets from, even if you are walking and shopping midday. Store your wallet or money in a front pocket or inside of an upper garment of clothing to help avoid thieves. Carry small bills rather than exchanging larger bills in public to decrease your chances of becoming a target of a thief or pickpocket attempt. Only carry items that are not considered valuable in tote bags or bags with longer straps, such as maps, water, and snacks.

Always avoid laying valuables out in the open or down in public or even in restrooms available in densely populated areas of the city. Even if you feel safe and comfortable with your surroundings, pickpocket attempts and thieves run rampant, even in locations throughout Venice that attract the most tourists regardless of the time of year.
