Located on a volcanic cliff, Orvieto is a worthwhile day trip from Rome. Besides cute shops and interesting sites underground, such as cisterns, passages, and storage rooms that were dug into the soft rock by Romans and the Etruscan, the Torre del Moro tower is 40 meters high and was built to protect the city. The cathedral, built around 1300, is a favorite attraction. It is covered with stained glass, colored mosaics, and sculptures. Inside are two chapels decorated with frescoes from the 14th century.
