Munnar Shopping – Shops, Stores, Best Buys & Inside Tips

Munnar Shopping

Munnar is a small town in the Indian state of Kerala that sits nearly 5,200 feet above sea level. Despite being some distance from any major urban centers, there are still shops and stores that might interest visitors.

Shops

The market area is an interesting place to wander around. Stalls are piled high with fresh fruit and vegetables. Sacks of rice, spices and tea are stacked on the available floor space, and banana leaves hang from tops of the stalls. You’ll find cooking pots and utensils of all shapes and sizes arranged next to plastic toys. As you walk around, you’ll also hear stall holders calling out, and locals bargaining over the available merchandise. There are impressive wooden souvenirs you can buy among these shops, including many decorations you can place around the home.

Flavorful Food and Drink

The Kannan Deven Hill Plantation, which is a Tata Company outlet, has very good quality tea at reasonable prices. Some of the varieties are not available outside the plantation, making this the perfect place to travel to buy some rarely available tea. Besides tea, this region is also known for its spices. Many varieties of spices are grown, including ginger, garlic, cardamom, vanilla, pepper, cinnamon, coffee, tea, clove ,and nutmeg. You can also find yourself homemade chocolates and vanilla tea while shopping around Munnar Town. Around the Kallar Waterfalls, close to Munnar, there is a shop operated by a farmer who sells homemade chocolates and cardamom from his own farm.

You can also buy wines and various liquors from different countries while in town. On days when there is a religious festival, alcohol might not be sold at your hotel. However, there is a government run liquor store in the area. It’s not far from the bazaar and is typically stocked with a variety of brands, though rarely with any recognizable to westerners. This is a store where people go to buy mostly Indian made liquors.
