Tips on Vilnius Warnings and Dangers – Stay Safe

Vilnius Warnings and Dangers

Vilnius, Lithuania is a city between Poland and Latvia with a long, rich cultural history. There are some warnings to be aware of before traveling here, as with any big city.

Crumbling Streets and Sidewalks

Vilnius’s street infrastructure is more unkempt than that of the rest of the Baltic region. There are pot holes and crumbling curbs; especially perilous is the walk from the train through the main part of town. The cobble stone streets have crumbled significantly, and locals say there’s a lack of public funds for repairs. Elderly and disabled people and their families won’t be easily accommodated here.

Nighttime Dangers and Lack of Signage

Some backpackers report being harassed and some tourists report feeling like they were not safe at night walking unless in a group. Robbery isn’t uncommon in Vilnius, but it’s not more expected than it is in most cities. The other dangers at night are due to the lack of street signs: People get lost even when carrying maps. It has been described as a total maze whether you’re on foot or in a car, and even tourist attraction signs are worn.

Toilets

Some report a lack of tissue paper in bathrooms around town and suggest purchasing something at a shop to use their facilities which will be cleaner and have tissue paper. Keep a pack of tissues or wipes with you, especially if you’re traveling with kids.
