Where Is Sounio?

Cape Sounion (or Soúnio) is a promontory about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Athens and is located at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula. The site is accessible by two roads from Athens. There is the scenic highway 91, which closely follows the west coast of Attica (the “Attic riviera”), and passes through numerous upscale residential districts and resorts, such as Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza. Or, there is another inland route that will also get you there (this road is closer to the airport).

Taking a Public Bus from Athens to Sounio

Many people stay in Athens, but look to go on excursions to other places in Greece. From downtown Athens you can take municipal bus service to Sounio. The buses leave frequently throughout the day and there are numerous ones that cover the Attica region, so you should have no trouble getting there. Just be sure to ask for the bus to Sounio when planning your outing so you don’t get on the wrong one by accident. You can conveniently buy your ticket after you board the bus.

The duration of the journey to Sounio will depend upon several factors, including which route you opt to take and the current traffic conditions (congestion tends to be common in Athens and Glifada). On average, it should take about 90 minutes for a one-way trip but could take up to two and a half hours. The last bus from Sounio back to Athens departs at 20:00, so do keep this in mind.

By Tour Bus

Sounio is a popular half-day trip from Athens, so most travel agents will offer you a tour to get there. If you do this, you may want to plan to take the evening tour so you can see the famous sunset.

Once you arrive, you’ll find the headland is roughly shaped like an axe-head. A narrow neck of land leads to the higher, gently sloping site of the Temple of Poseidon. On most sides of the axe-head are steep cliffs, up to 60 meters (196 feet) high. You can take a private taxi to get to Sounio, but this is a far more expensive transportation option. Taking a bus is the most inexpensive and efficient way to get to Sounio to see the temple, cliffs, and other great sea views.
