Kirkenes Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Kirkenes Transportation

When traveling to Kirkenes, Norway, be sure to see as much of the landscape as possible. There are a variety of convenient transportation options.

Flights

You can fly from Hurtigruten to Kirkenes, arriving at the Kirkenes Hoybuktmoen Airport in nearby Hesseng. Upon arrival, the most cost-effective way to travel from the airport to the town center is via the Flybus.

The Hurtigruten Cruise

Many of the tourists who travel to Kirkenes arrive for the day or a few days via the famous Hurtigruten cruise ship. Kirkenes is the endpoint of a tour that runs along the Norwegian coast. On certain days, ticketed travelers can take their cars with them on the Hurtigruten free of charge, between Bergen and Kirkenes, so that upon arrival in Kirkenes you can see the region at your own pace.

Taxis & Tour Buses

There are a lot of small tour-buses and taxis waiting for customers in the port of Kirkenes every day when the Hurtigruten ship arrives. Most have been reserved, but some are available for customers interested in renting them for a private tour. If you are only going to be in Kirkenes for a short period of time, a taxi or tour bus is a great way to see a large portion of this coastal community.

Traveling by Car

The main road through Kirkenes is the E6, which extends from Sweden through Oslo, then meanders north and east along the length of Norway to Kirkenes. From there, it continues into Murmansk, Russia and beyond. Traffic jams are rare in this part of Norway, so you can travel the coast stress-free.
