Clothes for Layering in San Francisco

What to Pack For San Francisco Clothes For Layering

San Francisco is known for being rainy and cool, so having the right clothing is vital to an enjoyable visit. Here are a few clothes-layering tips for visits to San Francisco.

Ideal Clothing

Since it can range from very cold to relatively warm throughout the course of a day in San Francisco, layering clothing is the best way to ensure your comfort. Wear a short or lightweight long-sleeved shirt and then layer a sweater or sweatshirt, rain coat, or jacket over top.  Beanies, hats, gloves, and scarves are also excellent ideas, particularly for early in the morning or during the evening, or if you are right on the water.

Sneakers or comfortable shoes or boots with a good pair of socks are recommended since walking is a big part of what most people do in San Francisco.  Open-toed shoes, flip-flops, or heels are risky choices due to the wet, chilly climate and the hilly terrain of the city.

However, surrounding areas of the city such as Marin, or neighboring cities, might be warmer so if you plan on venturing outside of the city, having a couple of pairs of shorts and flip-flops available would be a smart choice.

Carry a Backpack!

The weather can change rapidly in the city, so bringing a backpack where you can store extra layers when you remove them is a particularly good idea.  When the fog rolls in or rain begins to mist, the temperature can drop without much notice, so being prepared to put back on any layers you previously took off is essential. It also makes carrying souvenirs you pick up along the way easier.

Always have a camera with you because the city is full of beautiful landscapes and landmarks that you’ll definitely want to capture.  There are countless photo ops that you won’t want to miss.  Seals at Pier 39, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and Chinatown are some of the most popular spots to visit, and each of them require a camera and definitely layers of clothing because the weather will change in each spot!
