Abilene, Texas has a rich history and many of its buildings and memorials reflect key time periods in the town’s history. In addition, there are also interesting parks, sculptures and cultural activities suitable for people of all ages.

Visit the Welcome Center and Frontier Texas First

If you want to get to know Abilene, visit the welcome center for maps and information, then go right next door to Frontier Texas. There you will experience old west simulations including a saloon shootout, buffalo stampede and an interactive theater experience. It’s open 9am to 6pm Monday through Saturday and 1pm to 5pm on Sunday. There is an admission charge with a discount for students, seniors and the military.

Historical Buildings

Abilene is home to many historical buildings worth checking out, such as the Cypress building (which was known in 1890 as the Windsor Hotel) and is the oldest building in town. The O’Kelly office building, Mims building and Hotel Wooten are all buildings designed by David S. Castle in the 1920s and still retain their artistic charm.

Sculptures, Museums and the Zoo

Abilene has several interesting sculptures all over the town and you can get guidance on where to find them from the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council. Free tour maps are available at many hotels and other areas. Abilene also has a small zoo where you can see a collection of both local and exotic animals.
