Reeperbahn – St. Pauli, Hamburg, Germany, Insider Tips

Things to Do in Hamburg Reeperbahn – St. Pauli

Hamburg is a city in Germany that houses the St. Pauli district. St. Pauli, in turn, is home to the Reeperbahn, one of the city’s most well-known nightlife spots.

The Red Light District

The famous Reeperbahn runs the entire length of the world renowned red light district of St. Pauli. The approximately 600-meter-long street receives its name, Reeperbahn, from the fact that it was here where ships once had their rope twined. This area is traditionally known for its popular entertainment. That reputation grew further during the early 19th century, when its popularity as an entertainment district exploded. Things are very quiet during the day, giving visitors an easy view of the local shops. Everything is kept clean and orderly, though the cafes, bars, and nightclubs, come to life at night.

The Erotic Art Museum

The Erotic Art Museum features erotic art dating from the 16th century to the present. These pieces include everything from Japanese woodprints to paintings by Henry Miller, Jean Cocteau, and other artists. You can easily reach the museum from the harbor area. Visitors can take time not only to view the art, but also to browse the shops inside. The items on sale range from risque postcards to artsy coffee table books about erotica, posters, keychains, and more.

Popular Tourist Sites

There are a number of cultural sites located in the area. Davidwache is the most famous police station in all of Germany. The station is in Davistrasse, which is the very center of St.Pauli and Reeperbahn. St. Pauli and the Landungsbrucken are also an absolute must see when you’re in Hamburg. This is the place where all the ship tours begin, which are popular among first time visitors to the city. Finally, there is St. Paul’s Cathedral. While the cathedral itself is average as far as famous European cathedrals go, its tower is its highlight. If you are ready to be challenged, you can climb the 400 feet (555 steps) to the top for a rewarding view.
