Moab – What to Pack – Clothing and Supplies Tips

Moab: What to Pack

Moab is a desert town so shopping opportunities might be limited if you need something. Know what to pack before you go.

Luggage

Aside from your usual luggage, bring a backpack that allows you to be hands-free; essential if you plan to explore the area’s canyons and parks. Also bring a waterproof bag in case you’re going canoeing, kayaking, or if bad weather hits.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear

If you are off to the nearby National Parks like everyone else you won’t find much shade, so dress appropriately.

  • Lightweight and light-colored clothing (pack stuff that dries quickly if wet)
  • Water-resistant jacket
  • Socks (synthetic mix) avoid blisters
  • Two sun hats – many people end up losing hats in the river – have a spare

Pack solid comfortable shoes and a pair of hiking boots (no open toe sandals and sneakers are too slippery for many hikes). Toss a pair of water shoes in your bag too, you’ll find these to be helpful.

Toiletries/Medical Supplies

Remember, it gets really hot in the summer, so lots of sunscreen is a must. Other items to bring: first aid/emergency kit, insect repellent, small scissors, pocket knife, OTC pain relievers, moleskin, antibiotic salve, Ace bandage for splinting, wet wipes, and a whistle or small reflector (can use an old CD). Also pack medication for anaphylactic reaction if you are allergic to bee stings.

Photo Equipment

What ever you do, don’t forget to bring your camera! Pack extra film or SD cards. You won’t find electricity, so be sure you have plenty of battery power. If you are using a zoom or telephoto lens, bring a hiking stick with unipod capabilities or a lightweight tripod to help you stabilize your camera. Bring a watertight container to store your equipment. Dust can be a problem so lens cleaner is a good idea too.

Electronics to Pack

Miscellaneous

Bring several full water containers because you cannot count on finding potable water along the way. Bring something to purify the water (in case you do manage to find some along the way). The river water is too silty to treat.

Other items to bring:

  • Camping gear
  • Binoculars
  • Flashlight
  • Snacks
  • Small bag for hauling out your trash
  • Extra tube for your bike tire

Remember, everything needs to fit in your bag because you’ll frequently need to be hands-free.
