Durres Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Durres Transportation

Traveling through the beautiful country of Albania to the ancient city of Durres is a delightful trip. Located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, Durres has been an important port to many different empires, sitting directly across from the Bari and Brindisi ports of Italy. The city is actually at the heart of many major travel routes, as it marks the beginning of the Pan-European Corridor VIII, and is a major industrial rail connection to the cargo ships coming into the port. Needless to say, your options for traveling to Durres are many and varied.

Taxi and Car

Many visitors to Albania hire taxis, which are especially good for getting to your destinations for the first time. There is also the option to rent a car, which might not be as expensive as you expect. That being said, taking taxis and renting cars is not as common as taking public transportation, which is ubiquitous in every town across the whole country and offers excellent coverage to most places you would want to go.

Train

Durres is the train hub of Albania. Though the trains are slow and incredibly outdated, they are unbeatable for price and offer a unique experience that many travelers say they would not want to miss. The only caveat with the trains here is to travel without trying to keep a tight schedule. Train departure and arrival times are suggestions at best, and might be delayed or changed without announcement in English. Due to frequent schedule changes, time tables are reported to be often outdated.

Bus And Minibus

By far the most common and probably best supported way to travel in Durres is by bus and minibus. Getting around town or traveling to other parts of Albania, even other countries, is all possible at the major bus stops. Minibuses follow the same routes but wait to fill up with people entirely before leaving the station, offering a faster trip because they only have to let people off where they need, rather than stopping at every stop. Buses are incredibly cheap, you pay the driver once you board.
