Off the Beaten Path in Las Vegas – Within a 3 Hour Drive

Whether you’re on your own or with the family, you don’t need to stay on The Strip in order to have fun around Vegas. From the Lost city of Overton to local ghost towns, you will have a blast wherever you go.

Hoover Dam

The Hoover Dam is a must-visit when in the area. Its sheer size is incredible, as is the story of its construction. You can take tours while it is open or just walk along the top. It’s a great educational stop for the family, or just to see it if you’ve never been.

Calico Ghost Town

Throughout the 1800s, prospectors came to the American Southwest in hopes of striking it rich. While the Gold Rush drew many to California, others found silver in Nevada. When the silver dried up, the populations of entire cities moved out. Calico is exactly this kind of a city. Empty buildings give you a general idea as to the way of life. For the most part, everything is original.

Lost City Museum in Overton

The Lost City Museum in Overton is full of interesting rock carvings as well as a small museum. Much of this area was discovered as the Hoover Dam was being constructed (which in itself is a must visit).

National Parks

Some of the best national parks are in this area of the country. Zion National Park doesn’t receive as much attention as others in the area, but it is well worth the drive. The Grand Canyon is another destination within driving distance of Las Vegas. Of course, the Grand Canyon is massive, so while the closest point is within three hours, other locations around the canyon are significantly farther away.
