Watch Your Drink Carefully

Always watch your drink when ordering at a bar. You should not only watch when they make it but also keep it with you at all times. “Roofies” added to drinks is an all too common problem here, especially for women, so play it safe and keep your drink with you at all times.

Watch for Inspects and Spiders

Whether on the beach or hiking in the jungle, always watch out for insects and spiders. You will likely see very large spiders at some point. Tarantulas may look frightening, but most of these are harmless (usually the larger the tarantula the less of a problem it is). Mosquitos can be a problem though, so bring plenty of insect repellent and make sure to wear long sleeves when hiking in order to avoid bites.

Violent Crimes are Rarely Against Tourists

When it comes to cartel crimes, most of these are against rival gangs and don’t have much to do with touristy destinations. However, robberies do happens here, so play it smart. Don’t wander the streets at night on your own, and stay in well-lit areas. If you do need to travel at night, have your hotel call a cab. Never accept a cab that is not clearly identified as one and you should be fine.

Ask If Breakfast is Included

When checking into your hotel, you may be told where breakfast is and what time it begins. Naturally you’d assume that you receive it with your booking. However, that often isn’t the case, so when you go to check out you are hit with a massive fee. Always ask what is included when checking into your hotel.

Take Care of Your Bike/Scooter

If you rent a bike or scooter, make sure to keep an eye on it. As is the case not only in Mexico but in the United States, if you leave your bike out, someone may take off with it. Should this happen, the lender of the bike will charge you a huge fee. This fee is often far more than what the vehicle goes for.
