Tips on Pittsburgh Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Pittsburgh Warnings and Dangers

Pittsburgh is a fun city to visit, especially during football and hockey seasons, but it also has its fair share of sketchy areas and crime. Here’s how to keep out of harm’s way and better enjoy your stay.

High Crime Areas in Pittsburgh

Some of the most notable high-crime areas in Pittsburgh include Homewood and The Hill District. Homewood is known for its high crime statistics, including robberies, muggings, and murder. Homewood is closely connected with Brushton, another area to avoid if possible for similar reasons.

The Hill District has the highest rate of theft and violent crimes in Pittsburgh. One of the only tourist attractions within The Hill District is The Console Energy Center, home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, busiest during hockey season. While more visitors are likely to fill The Hill District during the hockey season, it is still considered a dangerous area and tourists should remain aware whenever walking the area after dark. Walking together with others in a large group is highly recommended, regardless of the time of year.

North Side, home of both Heinz Field and PNC Park, is considered one of the most desirable tourist locations for parks, hotels, and dining. However, it also has a reputation for crime involving violent acts and drug use.

The Duquesne neighborhood experiences about 30 shootings per year, making it an area to avoid when traveling to Pittsburgh. The only tourist attraction near Duqense is the Kennywood Amusement Park.

Suburban Neighborhood Watch

Just outside of the city, Wilkinsburg actually has a higher murder rate than Pittsburgh itself. North Hills is another suburban area of Pittsburgh that has experienced a rise in burglary and theft, prompting residents to take notice.

Some areas of Penn Hills are known to be safe, friendly, and welcoming. Others, however, are known for murders, theft, and drug crimes. Use caution when in this area, and remain vigilant after dark.

Staying Safe When Visiting Pittsburgh

Whenever you’re traveling to a questionable location in Pittsburgh, be sure to keep a low profile, store valuables in your hotel, and travel in groups if possible (especially after dark). Avoid carrying bags or purses that are highly distracting, visible, or easy to grab (including items with long straps). Have a destination in mind prior to heading out into areas of Pittsburgh that have higher crime rates.
