Tips on Hanoi Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe

Hanoi Warnings and Dangers

Hanoi is a place to experience a variety of cultures and a different way of life. When visiting Hanoi, there are a few precautions to take to ensure your safety at all times.

Crossing Roads/Road Safety

Road safety concern is one of the top complaints from tourists, as there are not many rules when driving and when pedestrians are able to cross the streets. Remain cautious any time you are crossing a road, as tourists note it is not uncommon to find a local in the street after being hit by a vehicle. Ask locals for more information about the safest areas where there is a lack of traffic and an easier way for pedestrians to make their way through the city.

Food

Be sure to check the freshness of meats you purchase and where they come from, as there are various reports of meat being contaminated, causing sickness. Ask locals about the best locations to stop and eat when you are in Hanoi.

Tourists

While many companies offer tour guides to those new to Hanoi as first-time visitors, taxi car drivers who pick up tourists for their own “tours” can hike prices way up. Always take a taxi that is marked and work with a reputable company. Many tourists recommend calling for a cab in advance so you know you can trust it.

Remain Alert After Dark

As with many foreign countries you may travel, be aware that during nighttime is when most crimes are committed, especially against tourists. There have been reports of muggings and robberies, especially if you have been out having drinks or need to visit a local ATM to get the cash you require. Be sure to avoid wearing valuables, as this vastly increases your chances of becoming a target. Whenever you plan to take a trip through the city of Hanoi at night, be sure to do so only if you are with a group. This should help ward off potential criminals and pickpockets.
