Things to Do in Spokane, Washington State

Spokane Things to Do

Visitors to Spokane enjoy a unique blend of nature, cultural attractions, and family fun.

Nature and Family Fun

Riverfront Park occupies 100 acres of land and water in the heart of Downtown spokane on the site of Expo ’74.  Visitors can walk along the river, feed the ducks, admire sculptures, or picnic on the grass, all for free. The park also has a number of paid attractions, which include a sky ride over the Spokane Falls, the Looff Carrousel, an IMAX Theater, miniature golf, and ice-skating. You can buy a punch ticket for the rides or get a day pass that includes almost everything. They also sell season passes.

Downstream from Riverfront Park, the Spokane River cascades down a series of falls. It creates a unique feature not found anywhere else in the U.S.

Get away from everything for a while on the 37-mile long historic Centennial Trail. You can ride bikes, rollerblade, or walk on this well maintained trail. Some sections even permit horse riding.

Arts and Culture

Look out for street artwork on underpasses and on the sides of buildings as you walk around downtown Spokane. Murals cover most of the walls where the freeway or the train passes overhead.

You’ll find some interesting sculptures in Riverfront Park and the area right outside. Exhibits include a local astronaut who died in the Columbia Space Shuttle; a giant concrete Japanese lantern; sculptures honoring mining, nursing, and Vietnam Vets; a mountain sheep; the Bloomsday runners; and the Garbage Goat.

If you enjoy plants and flowers, don’t miss Manito Park Gardens. Five separate gardens including a rose garden, a Japanese garden, a lilac garden, and a classic European Renaissance garden with symmetrical beds and central fountain make up the 90-acre park established in 1904.

The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture has six galleries and an excellent Native American collection. Recent traveling exhibits have ranged from Sue (the dinosaur) to Star Wars.

The Spokane Opera House plays host to The Symphony, concerts, musicals, and even comedy shows.

If you enjoy live theater, Spokane has everything from a children’s theater, to the INB Performing Arts Center with “Best of Broadway” touring shows and musical events.
